A Jeju Air flight carrying 181 people crashed at South Korea’s Muan airport on Monday after veering off the runway during landing, killing at least 28 people. The incident occurred in the South Jeolla province as Flight 2216 returned from Thailand, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Authorities rescued two individuals and continued evacuating passengers from the rear section of the Boeing 737-800, which erupted in flames after a failed belly landing attempt. Emergency services at the airport responded immediately after the crash, reported at around 9 a.m.
Of the 181 people onboard, 175 were passengers, and six were flight crew. Initial investigations suggest the crash was caused by "contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear."
Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for the full mobilisation of resources to save the survivors. “All related agencies must mobilise all available resources to save the personnel,” he stated.
