At Coachella, the son of Bradley Nowell, the late singer of Sublime, performed with his father's band. This performance was a significant moment, bridging past and present as he connected with his father's musical legacy in front of a live audience.
Jakob Nowell, the son of Sublime's late lead singer Bradley Nowell, is carrying on his father's musical legacy. At the Coachella music festival, Jakob joined two of Sublime's original members, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, on stage. This moment marked a significant continuation of the band's journey.
Tragically, Bradley Nowell passed away in San Francisco in 1996 at the age of 28 due to an overdose, merely two months before Sublime's renowned self-titled album was released.
Following Bradley Nowell's passing, Sublime essentially disbanded. Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson formed a new band called the Long Beach Dub Allstars before later joining forces with singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez in 2009 to create Sublime with Rome.
Their performance at Coachella marked the new group's first public appearance since announcing that Jakob Nowell, the 28-year-old musician, would be joining Gaugh and Wilson. Their initial performance together occurred in December during a private benefit concert in Los Angeles.
At Coachella, Sublime delighted the crowd with classic hits like "Bad Fish," "Santeria," and "What I Got," with Jakob Nowell's vocals echoing his father's hauntingly. Although Jakob was only 11 months old when his father passed away, he considers Gaugh and Wilson as his "family." Preparing for his debut with his father's band was "emotionally complicated," he revealed in a recent interview with People.
Stepping into this role has provided him with a sense of closure, Jakob shared, stating that the story now feels complete.
Sublime initially emerged on the music scene in the late 1980s. Their unique blend of ska-punk and California rock gained widespread acclaim with their 1996 self-titled major label debut, their third album, which became a massive hit.
Currently, Sublime with Rome is on their farewell tour, culminating in a final show in August. However, according to People, Jakob Nowell, Gaugh, and Wilson plan to continue playing together at various music festivals and one-off gigs in the future.
