Dalian Jinzhou Bay: Inside the World’s Largest Artificial Island Airport

Discover Dalian Jinzhou Bay, the world’s largest artificial island airport, known for its innovative design, sustainability, and engineering marvels.

Planning for the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport was initiated in 2003, although major construction efforts only began in recent years.
China is constructing the world’s largest airport on an artificial island. Located off the northeastern coast, the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport spans 20 square kilometers, featuring four runways and a passenger terminal covering 900,000 square meters.

The airport’s plans date back to 2003, but significant progress on the project has only recently been made. Expected to be completed by 2035, it is designed to accommodate 80 million passengers annually through 540,000 flights, as stated in an official announcement.

Once operational, the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport will surpass both Hong Kong International Airport and Japan's Kansai Airport, becoming the largest artificial island airport worldwide.
“The country’s largest offshore airport is gradually emerging from the sea, much like the sunrise in the east,” the official statement remarked.

This ambitious undertaking faces notable challenges, including complex geological conditions and a tight construction timeline, according to Li Xiang, the project’s chief engineer.

Dalian, home to 7.5 million residents, serves as a crucial transportation hub due to its close proximity to Japan and South Korea. The city’s existing international airport, Dalian Zhoushuizi, has reached full capacity despite several expansions, necessitating the construction of a new airport.

China is poised to become the leading market for aviation services by 2043, overtaking North America and Europe. The market's value is projected to increase from $23 billion in 2024 to $61 billion.

In 2024, China’s aviation industry hit a record high, with 700 million passengers transported. The aviation services market grew by 24% compared to the previous year, climbing from $18.6 billion in 2023 to $23 billion, fueled by enhanced connectivity between domestic and international routes.

By 2043, China is expected to operate 11,160 aircraft, with 9,520 being new additions, accounting for 20% of global demand. Over 26% of these new aircraft will replace older models. This growth is anticipated to contribute to a 5.1% annual increase in China’s aviation services sector.
