Exberry Color Supplier GNT Plans Expansion into Fermentation

GNT, known for supplying Exberry natural colors, has announced plans to expand its operations into the field of fermentation. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing their product offerings and driving innovation within the natural color solutions market. By leveraging fermentation technology, GNT seeks to create new, sustainable, and high-quality color solutions to meet the growing demands of consumers and industries for natural and clean-label products.

GNT is developing new plant-based, sustainable Exberry color solutions for food and drink using unique fermentation technologies.

The company, which has been creating Exberry colors from fruits, vegetables, and plants since its founding in 1978, is now venturing into fermentation to enhance innovation and sustainability in its plant-based solutions.

Producing colors through fermentation offers improved functionality and allows for highly efficient, sustainable year-round production. Once the raw materials are cultivated, they can be scaled up in larger bioreactors for industrial production. This process involves maintaining optimal conditions to ensure high biomass yield and pigment concentration.

To achieve its goals, GNT is collaborating with Plume Biotechnology, a UK-based start-up specializing in fermentation science and bioprocessing for natural colors.

Frederik Hoeck, GNT Group’s managing director, stated, “As pioneers in plant-based colors, innovation is crucial to GNT, and we are committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions for our customers. As a family business, we understand the importance of acting responsibly and ensuring true sustainability. This partnership with Plume will help us add future-proof options to our plant-based Exberry portfolio.”

Thomas Burns, CEO of Plume Biotechnology, said, “The rapid evolution of fermentation-based technologies is providing unprecedented opportunities within natural colors. Plume is passionate about translating these technological developments into healthy, exciting, and sustainable products for consumers. GNT is the perfect strategic partner, sharing our commitment to excellent products and sustainability.”

The collaboration aims to help GNT expand its plant-based Exberry portfolio while meeting its sustainability goals. In 2022, GNT announced 17 targets to optimize its environmental and social impacts by the end of the decade.

GNT’s Sustainability Report 2023 revealed significant progress on these goals, including a 22% reduction in carbon intensity at its factories since 2020 and a 13% improvement in water efficiency.
