Workers at the ExxonMobil petrochemical complex in northern France, facing job losses, have agreed to temporarily suspend their strike until June 4. The pause aims to facilitate discussions concerning severance packages between the company and the union. However, if unresolved issues persist, the strike may resume on June 5, according to a representative from the CGT union.

Boston Brand Media also found ExxonMobil Chemical France announced plans last month to shut down the steam cracker and cease chemical production at the Gravenchon facility, leading to the loss of 677 jobs starting in 2025.

ExxonMobil reported that the site has incurred losses exceeding 500 million euros ($542 million) since 2018, rendering it economically unviable.

The strike, initiated by approximately 20 chemical unit workers across various shifts on May 24, was prompted by dissatisfaction with departure negotiations. While the strike led to a reduced number of shift operators until May 29, there was no disruption to the supply chain.

To facilitate ongoing negotiations, a temporary suspension of the strike was announced on May 30, with further pauses planned for June 4.

The strike primarily affects workers involved in polypropylene and polyethylene production, while refinery operations remain unaffected.
