A family purchased a 1909 train car for just $3,000 and transformed it into a one-of-a-kind Airbnb. Their creative renovation turned the abandoned train car into a charming rental property that now generates over $90,000 in annual income, offering guests a unique and memorable stay.
“We wanted to blend the historical charm with the beauty of nature,” French says, highlighting the juxtaposition of old and new.
Despite its remote location, the train car quickly gained popularity on Airbnb, becoming one of the platform’s standout listings, according to Fast Company.
Guests can stay in the restored train car for $325 to $350 per night.
“What I love most is the deep sense of history and the story that the train car carries,” French shares.
In its first year, the train car achieved a 90% occupancy rate and earned $14,179. Since then, annual earnings have risen to between $75,000 and $90,000, and projections for 2023 estimate $105,000.
The train car was booked for 231 nights in 2023, maintaining about a 65% profit margin. Approximately 30-35% of revenue covers expenses such as cleaning, maintenance, property taxes, and insurance.
Although they could charge more per night, the family values sharing the experience with guests from all over the world who appreciate its historical significance.
“There are so many forgotten structures and stories out there, waiting to be rediscovered and cherished,” French says. “It takes passion and inspiration to breathe new life into these treasures.”
