First Look: 2025 Lucid Gravity SUV, a 3-Row Rival to Tesla and Rivian

The 2025 Lucid Gravity SUV is set to challenge Tesla and Rivian with its 3-row design, offering luxury, impressive range, and advanced features. This all-electric SUV aims to compete in the growing market of electric family vehicles, combining performance and spaciousness to rival the top contenders in the industry. Expect cutting-edge technology and premium comfort from Lucid's latest innovation.

The 2025 Lucid Gravity has made its debut. Much like the Air sedan, which earned the 2022 Car of the Year award, this SUV aims to raise the bar. However, the Gravity is not just an Air sedan turned into an SUV with a wagon-style body and raised suspension. Instead, it's a significant evolution from the Air and evokes strong emotions. We definitely have a lot of thoughts about this one.

A Mix of Air and... Isuzu? As someone who drives MotorTrend's Lucid Air test car regularly, I often find myself wishing for more cabin space. The Air's low roofline can be a challenge for people of different heights, with some finding the driving position a bit cramped.

Enter the 2025 Lucid Gravity—this SUV offers easier entry and exit, thanks to its taller stance. It still maintains a sleek, low look reminiscent of the early 2000s Isuzu Axiom, but any fan of the Air will instantly recognize the Gravity as a Lucid. While Lucid showcased the SUV in its higher suspension mode, at its lowest, the Gravity is expected to have a car-like silhouette, a stark contrast to the more rugged-looking Rivian R1S.

The Gravity will be available in two-row, five-seat and three-row, seven-passenger configurations, with a six-passenger version featuring second-row captain's chairs possibly coming later.

Innovative Features for Lucid New for Lucid is the option of rear-wheel steering and an air suspension system that automatically adjusts based on speed. These features, if executed well, should enhance ride comfort and handling. As the Gravity hits the market in late 2024, we'll see if Lucid manages to deliver these innovations smoothly.

An Electric SUV with a 500-Mile Range? Lucid stunned the EV world with its Air sedan, combining speed, fun driving dynamics, efficiency, and over 500 miles of EPA-rated range for select models. This sets high expectations for the 2025 Gravity.

While specific details are scarce, we know that the Gravity has updated motors and boasts a drag coefficient below 0.24 in some trims. It won’t offer 500 miles of range, but at least one trim is expected to reach 440 miles. With a 300-kW charge rate, the Gravity can add 200 miles in just 15 minutes, keeping it competitive with rivals like the Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S.

Towing and Off-Road Capabilities Dual-motor all-wheel drive will be standard on the Gravity, but Lucid hasn't ruled out a single-motor, rear-drive version in the future. While the Gravity isn’t built for hardcore off-roading, it features an off-road mode that maximizes air suspension height and torque. With a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, the Gravity falls short of rivals like the Rivian R1S but far exceeds the capabilities of the Air sedan.

The Gravity is set to impress with acceleration, going from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Power output should at least match the 480 hp of the Air, with higher trims likely reaching 620 hp or more. There’s hope for a high-performance Gravity Sapphire, given the success of the 1,234-hp Air Sapphire.

An Evolving Interior Inside the 2025 Gravity, the design mirrors the Air’s but offers noticeable improvements. Lucid’s head of design, Derek Jenkins, noted the brand's significant growth since the Air's debut. The SUV features touchpads and flat buttons on its squircle-shaped steering wheel, an upgraded OLED display system, and more reliable tech.

Though the lower screen that retracts in the Air has been removed, a new "relax" setting dims the screens, simplifying the interface for long night drives. Lucid has also added features like the Lucid Sanctuary mode, which displays calming visuals and sounds paired with a massage function—a step beyond what Mercedes and Genesis offer. There's even an in-car karaoke feature for entertainment.

The Gravity’s glass roof is treated with a thermal coating to reduce heat, addressing one of the main complaints about the Air’s roof. While a steel-roof option isn't available, the SUV’s glass roof offers an open view of the sky.

Enhanced Usability and Charging Lucid has introduced a new key fob for the Gravity, solving the battery issues that plagued the Air’s slim key. Additionally, a tempered glass cover over the front cupholders gives the interior a rich feel, with different etching patterns depending on the trim.

The Gravity will come with Lucid's updated software system, "Oz" 2.4, featuring improvements in navigation, lane assistance, and charging integration. Lucid is also transitioning to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug, allowing access to Tesla’s Supercharger network and faster charging speeds.

Ready to Take Off? The 2025 Lucid Gravity embodies Lucid’s forward-thinking design and technological innovation. As the brand expands beyond the executive sedan market, the Gravity is poised to attract a broader audience with its anticipated starting price of under $80,000. Whether Lucid can deliver on its promises remains to be seen, but the Gravity certainly broadens the brand's appeal in ways the Air never could.
