Green Africa has acquired its first owned aircraft after facing flight disruptions due to a lessor-related issue. The move marks a significant step for the airline, ensuring greater operational stability and reducing reliance on leased planes. This acquisition is expected to enhance service reliability and support the airline’s growth plans. Green Africa remains committed to expanding its fleet and providing affordable air travel, overcoming past challenges to strengthen its position in the aviation market.
Nigerian airline Green Africa Airways has taken ownership of its first aircraft, following significant disruptions to its operations due to an issue with its leasing partner.
Chief Executive Babawande Afolabi informed passengers about the operational challenges, which arose during the Eid al-Fitr festival. He described the situation as a "sudden and unexpected development" with the lessor, which forced the airline to halt services for several days. Operations were suspended until after the Eid al-Fitr holiday in late March, Afolabi stated, but assured passengers that efforts were underway to resume flights as soon as possible.
On 31 March, Green Africa announced the acquisition of an ATR 72-500, marking the first owned aircraft in its fleet. Previously operated by Channel Islands-based Aurigny and Korea’s Hi Air, the turboprop (5N-GAB) was partially financed through a debt facility provided by Nigeria’s Access Bank.
Green Africa anticipates the aircraft will begin operations soon, pending regulatory approval. “This aircraft will play a crucial role as we carefully progress to the next phase of expanding safe, affordable, and reliable air travel for more customers in the region,” said Afolabi.
The airline, which began revenue operations in 2021, has been running a small fleet of ATRs. “We are impressed with Green Africa’s journey so far and excited about the brand’s future growth,” stated Access Bank Managing Director Roosevelt Ogbonna.
