Insights into 2025: Anticipated Developments

Explore the anticipated developments shaping 2025, including breakthroughs in technology, shifts in global economies, and evolving societal trends. Discover what experts predict for the future, from advancements in artificial intelligence and sustainable innovations to transformative changes in industries and everyday life. This comprehensive insight highlights key milestones expected to define the coming year.

If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that change can happen at an extraordinary pace. While many events remain unpredictable, are some developments foreseeable? To explore this, Ipsos conducted a survey involving over 23,700 participants across 33 countries, delving into predictions for the coming year. The survey touched on various topics, from technological advancements to environmental challenges and world security. Although the data relies solely on the opinions of survey respondents and does not incorporate insights from experts or analysts, it offers a fascinating snapshot of global sentiments and perspectives.

One of the key takeaways from the survey is the widespread agreement on the likelihood of rising global temperatures. According to the findings, eight in ten respondents believe that the world will continue to warm in the coming year. This sentiment is particularly strong in Southeast Asia, with 91 percent of respondents in Indonesia, 89 percent in the Philippines, and 88 percent in Malaysia expressing this belief. Alongside this, more than seven in ten participants (72 percent) anticipate an increase in extreme weather events in their respective countries compared to the previous year. Despite these concerns, there is notable skepticism regarding government action to address climate change. Only 52 percent of respondents believe that their governments are likely to introduce stricter carbon emission reduction targets. Interestingly, optimism on this front is highest in China, where 84 percent of respondents expect more ambitious governmental measures.

The survey also sheds light on views regarding ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. Pessimism prevails, with only about two in ten people believing that conflicts in the Middle East will end in 2025. The outlook is slightly more hopeful for Ukraine, where nearly three in ten respondents think the war might conclude, though this represents a four-percentage-point decline from last year’s predictions. Furthermore, only one in three respondents globally believes that people in their country will become more tolerant of one another in 2025, marking a two-percentage-point decrease compared to the previous year.

In the realm of technology, the survey reveals mixed feelings about artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on the job market. Nearly two-thirds of respondents expect AI to replace jobs in their countries in 2025. At the same time, 43 percent believe that AI will lead to the creation of many new jobs. These contrasting views highlight the dual nature of technological progress, which can simultaneously bring about challenges and opportunities. Additionally, the concept of living in virtual worlds appears to be gaining traction, with 59 percent of respondents agreeing that more people will inhabit virtual spaces next year, up from 56 percent in 2022.

The Ipsos survey paints a picture of a world grappling with uncertainty and change. While many are concerned about environmental and geopolitical challenges, there is a mix of optimism and apprehension about technological advancements. This data, though limited in scope, captures diverse sentiments and provides a valuable glimpse into the collective outlook for 2025.
