The launch brings forth fresh customization choices, the largest redesign of Photos ever seen, robust updates to ensure seamless connectivity, and Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system.

iOS 18 brings new ways to customize iPhone, additional ways to stay connected in Messages, the biggest-ever redesign of the Photos app, and so much more.

Boston Brand Media brings you the latest news - Apple provided a glimpse of iOS 18 today, a significant update boasting expanded customization options, the most extensive redesign ever of the Photos app, fresh email management features in Mail, satellite-enabled Messages, and much more. Users gain flexibility to organize apps and widgets anywhere on the Home Screen, tailor Lock Screen buttons, and access additional controls swiftly through Control Center. Photos get streamlined into a new unified view, with convenient collections for easy access to favorites. Mail enhances inbox organization using on-device intelligence, while iMessage introduces new text effects. Leveraging the same technology as existing iPhone satellite features, Messages now allows communication via satellite when traditional connectivity is unavailable. iOS 18 also debuts Apple Intelligence, a personalized intelligence system integrating generative models and personal context across iPhone, iPad, and Mac platforms, prioritizing privacy.

Boston Brand Media also found that this feature, deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, utilizes Apple silicon to comprehend and generate language and images, streamline app interactions, and incorporate personal context, simplifying daily tasks. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, expressed excitement about iOS 18's rich feature set, highlighting its enhanced customization, redesigned Photos app, and improved messaging capabilities. He emphasized the groundbreaking potential of Apple Intelligence to deliver intuitive, privacy-focused experiences, anticipating users' enthusiastic reception of the update.

New Levels of Customization and Capability

iPhone users now enjoy enhanced customization options for the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. They have the freedom to arrange apps and widgets in any vacant area on the Home Screen, allowing for convenient access by situating them above the dock or aligning them neatly with wallpapers. Moreover, users can apply a dark or tinted effect to app icons and widgets, and resize them to suit their preferences, tailoring their device experience to perfection.

The redesigned Control Center offers enhanced accessibility to everyday tasks and introduces unprecedented levels of customization and adaptability. It provides swift access to groups of frequently used controls, including media playback, Home controls, and connectivity, with effortless swiping between each group. Users can seamlessly integrate controls from supported third-party apps into Control Center, enabling actions like unlocking a vehicle or initiating social media content creation, all within a unified interface. The new controls gallery showcases a comprehensive range of available options, allowing users to personalize the layout and size of controls and even create entirely new groups to suit their preferences.

Control Center has been redesigned to provide easier access to many of the things users do every day, and it gets new levels of customization and flexibility with the ability to add and organize controls.

For the first time ever, users have the ability to customize the controls located at the bottom of the Lock Screen. This includes selecting options from the controls gallery or opting to remove them altogether. With the introduction of the Action button on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, users can swiftly access controls featured in the gallery.

Photos Gets a Unified View, New Collections, and Customization

In its most significant redesign to date, Photos aims to simplify the process of locating and reliving cherished memories for users. A streamlined, single view presents a familiar grid layout, while newly introduced collections enable thematic browsing without the need for manual album organization. Users can also pin favorite collections for easy access. A dynamic carousel view showcases daily highlights featuring beloved individuals, pets, locations, and more. The app features autoplaying content, breathing life into photo libraries and allowing users to enjoy past moments while browsing. Recognizing the uniqueness of each user's photo library, the app offers customization options, enabling users to organize collections, pin frequently accessed ones, and curate the carousel view according to their preferences.

Powerful Ways to Stay Connected in Messages

iMessage now offers an array of fresh text effects, enriching conversations with dynamic, animated enhancements applied to individual letters, words, phrases, or emojis. Users gain greater expressive capability through formatting options such as bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough, allowing for nuanced tone conveyance. Tapbacks have expanded to encompass emojis and stickers, while the ability to compose and schedule messages for future sending is introduced, enhancing convenience and flexibility in communication.

Messages offers more capabilities for self-expression with formatting and animated text effects that can be applied to any letter, word, phrase, or emoji in iMessage.

When communicating with contacts who don't use Apple devices, the Messages app now supports RCS, offering richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to traditional SMS and MMS. iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite for situations where cellular or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. Utilizing the same innovative technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, Messages via satellite seamlessly enables users to connect to the nearest satellite directly from the Messages app, facilitating the exchange of texts, emojis, and Tapbacks via iMessage and SMS. Dynamic Island ensures users are aware of their satellite connection status. As iMessage prioritizes user privacy, messages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Messages via satellite allows users to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is not available.

Enhancements to Mail

In the upcoming months, Mail will unveil enhancements to help users efficiently manage their inbox and stay informed. On-device categorization will automatically sort incoming emails into distinct categories: Primary for personal and time-sensitive messages, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Additionally, Mail will introduce a new digest view, consolidating relevant emails from a business, enabling users to swiftly identify essential information at a glance.

Big Updates to Safari

Safari, renowned as the world's fastest browser, now provides an enhanced browsing experience with the introduction of Highlights and a revamped Reader feature. Utilizing machine learning, Safari can now extract crucial information from webpages. For instance, users can access a summary to grasp the essence of an article, swiftly locate the address of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark, or even play a song directly from an article discussing the track or album. The redesigned Reader feature offers additional methods to enjoy articles distraction-free, including a summary and table of contents for longer reads.

Introducing the Passwords App

Expanding upon the legacy of Keychain, which debuted over 25 years ago, the new Passwords app simplifies access to users' passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. Additionally, the app offers alerts to users concerning common vulnerabilities, such as easily guessed or reused passwords, as well as those exposed in known data breaches.

New Privacy Features Designed to Empower Users

iOS 18 empowers users with enhanced control over their device's privacy settings, enabling them to manage app visibility, contact sharing, and accessory connections more effectively. The introduction of locked and hidden apps provides users with reassurance that sensitive information, including app notifications and content, remains private. Users can now lock apps individually and opt to hide them, relocating them to a secured, hidden apps folder for added privacy. When an app is locked or hidden, its contents, such as messages or emails, are concealed from searches, notifications, and other system-wide locations.

For times when a user shares their device with someone and wants peace of mind that private information remains unseen, apps can be locked with Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode, and information from these apps won’t surface in search or notifications.

iOS 18 prioritizes user control by enabling them to selectively share specific contacts with apps. Moreover, developers now have the capability to establish seamless connections between third-party accessories and iPhones without granting access to all other devices on the user's network. This ensures the privacy of a user's devices while facilitating effortless pairing processes.

In iOS 18, users can choose to share only specific contacts with an app.

Apple Intelligence Transforms the iPhone Experience

Apple Intelligence, deeply integrated into iOS 18 and designed with privacy as a fundamental principle, revolutionizes how users enhance their writing and communicate effectively. Through the incorporation of new systemwide Writing Tools within iOS 18, users gain the ability to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various platforms, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party applications.

iOS 18 introduces exciting image features to elevate communication and self-expression. With Image Playground, users can swiftly craft playful images in seconds, selecting from three dynamic styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Integrated seamlessly into apps like Messages, Image Playground is user-friendly and also accessible through a dedicated app, offering endless creative possibilities.

With Memories in Photos, users can effortlessly curate personalized stories by simply typing a description. Leveraging Apple Intelligence, the system selects the most suitable photos and videos based on the provided description, constructs a narrative with chapters derived from identified themes within the content, and arranges them into a cohesive movie with its own storyline. Furthermore, a new Clean Up tool accurately detects and removes distracting background objects from photos, preserving the focus on the main subject without unintended alterations.

With the integration of Apple Intelligence, Siri undergoes significant enhancements, evolving to be more natural, contextually relevant, and personalized. Users now have the option to interact with Siri via text input, enabling seamless switching between text and voice communication based on individual preferences and situational needs. This versatility ensures that users can engage with Siri in a manner that feels most suitable at any given moment.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple introduces a pioneering privacy standard in AI by offering flexible computational capacity that seamlessly transitions between on-device processing and larger, server-based models running on dedicated Apple silicon servers. When requests are directed to Private Cloud Compute, user data remains inaccessible to Apple, stored solely for fulfilling user requests, ensuring utmost privacy. Independent experts can verify this privacy protocol. Moreover, ChatGPT access is integrated into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools across Apple platforms, enabling users to leverage its expertise, image analysis, and document understanding capabilities seamlessly without switching between tools.
