McDonald’s is introducing a $5 value meal starting in June, but it will only be available for one month. This limited-time offer allows customers to enjoy more value at their favorite fast-food restaurant.
KEY POINTS
McDonald’s is introducing a $5 value meal in the U.S. for a limited time. The promotion, starting on June 25 and lasting about a month, includes a McChicken or McDouble, four-piece chicken nuggets, fries, and a drink, according to a source familiar with the offering. In a statement to CNBC, McDonald’s emphasized the importance of providing meaningful value to customers through national advertising, a practice integral to their brand since its inception.
CNBC reported last week that McDonald’s was working on introducing a value offering to its menus, with franchisees discussing and voting on the details. An initial proposal for the meal did not meet the necessary requirements.
On Friday, CNBC reported that Coca-Cola contributed marketing funds to make the deal more attractive. In a statement on Wednesday, Coca-Cola said, “We routinely partner with our customers on marketing programs to meet consumer needs. This helps us grow our businesses together.”
The financial terms of this partnership were not disclosed.
The month-long promotion comes as restaurants are beginning to experience a long-anticipated consumer pullback.
McDonald’s recently reported mixed first-quarter results, with U.S. same-store sales slightly below expectations. Although higher prices boosted average checks, some consumers reduced their spending due to the increased costs.
“Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they face elevated prices in their day-to-day spending, which is putting pressure on the [quick-service restaurant] industry,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said during the company’s earnings call on April 30.
He added that McDonald’s needs to be "laser-focused" on affordability to attract diners.
“Great value and affordability have always been hallmarks of the McDonald’s brand, and all three legs of the stool are coming together to deliver that at a time when our customers really need it. This is the power and promise of the Golden Arches,” John Palmaccio, McDonald’s owner and operator and chair of the Operators National Advertising Fund, said in a statement to CNBC about the $5 promotion. — CNBC’s Amelia Lucas contributed to this report.
