This article delves into the reasons behind this financial support, highlighting influential figures and their motivations. Forbes reports that 76 billionaires are supporting Kamala Harris, whereas 49 billionaires have been recognized as supporters of Donald Trump.

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election intensifies, billionaires across the nation are discreetly aligning themselves, providing substantial financial support to either Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump. While some, like Elon Musk, openly express their backing, others, including Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg, prefer to remain neutral, despite ongoing speculation regarding their political preferences.

According to Forbes, 76 billionaires are backing Kamala Harris, whereas 49 billionaires are known to support Donald Trump.

There may be additional billionaires who will eventually endorse a candidate, but their contributions will not be disclosed until after the election when the Federal Election Commission publishes its final reports in December.

Why are Billionaires Supporting Harris?

Despite Kamala Harris’s critiques of pro-billionaire policies, many affluent individuals are backing her for pragmatic reasons. A letter from over a dozen billionaires supporting Harris highlighted their expectation that she will uphold “fair and predictable policies” that foster economic stability. This message resonates particularly with Silicon Valley billionaires who have been familiar with Harris since her tenure as a prosecutor in California. Recent surveys also indicate that industries such as technology, healthcare, and sustainability would flourish under a Harris administration.

  • Laurene Powell Jobs (Apple)

Notable figures such as Melinda French Gates and Joe Gebbia (Airbnb) have also financially supported the Democratic candidate. High-profile individuals, including Mark Cuban and Magic Johnson, have signed an open letter endorsing her.

Donald Trump’s Billionaire Backers

Trump, who presents himself as a defender of both the ultra-wealthy and the working class, has received considerable support from 49 billionaires. Key supporters include:

  • Miriam Adelson (Las Vegas Sands Corp.)
  • Don Ahern (Las Vegas Construction)

  • John Paulson (Paulson & Co.)
  • Thomas Siebel (Siebel Systems)

Trump’s supporters also encompass tech mogul Elon Musk, who has actively campaigned for him, attending rallies and offering incentives to voters in swing states through his political action committee.

Billionaires Remaining Neutral (For Now)

While numerous billionaires are publicly supporting either Harris or Trump, others are maintaining their distance for the moment:

  • Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has praised Donald Trump's resilience following his shooting incident but has yet to publicly endorse a candidate.
  • Warren Buffett, a known Democrat, has remained silent this election cycle.
  • Mark Zuckerberg reportedly held private conversations with Donald Trump but has not publicly endorsed any candidate.
  • Bill Gates has not officially endorsed anyone, but in a July interview, he expressed favorable views toward Harris, remarking, “It's great to have somebody who's younger, who can think about things like AI and how we shape that in the right way.”
  • Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has not endorsed any candidate according to his spokesperson. Last week, however, Trump shared a false social media post claiming Dimon's endorsement.
  • Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund, described the upcoming election as “the most consequential” of his life, yet he has refrained from endorsing either Harris or Trump.
  • Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, who previously found Trump’s election “deeply offensive” as an immigrant, has not made any public statements regarding the current candidates during this election cycle.
  • Larry Ellison and Ken Griffin: Despite their historical financial support for Republican initiatives, these two billionaires have remained unexpectedly quiet in the months leading up to the election.

As the election draws near, it is likely that more billionaires will disclose their political preferences.
