A new artwork showcasing 9,000 intricately crafted paper doves has been unveiled, offering a breathtaking visual display. This stunning installation symbolizes peace, unity, and hope, captivating viewers with its scale and delicate beauty. The display invites reflection on the themes of freedom and interconnectedness, making it a powerful artistic expression that resonates with audiences worldwide.
Approximately 9,000 paper doves have been suspended from the ceiling of Tewkesbury Abbey as part of a new, striking art installation.
The paper birds, decorated with messages of "love and peace," were created by local schools, community groups, and residents. The installation, titled Peace Doves and designed by artist Peter Walker, is brought to life with a sound and light show.
Reverend Canon Nick Davies described the artwork as unique and visually impressive. "The addition of a sound and light display, which will take place in the evenings, includes specially composed music and special effects," he explained.
He believes these elements will enhance the visual impact of the installation. Each dove carries a personal message about peace, which collectively forms a massive display for the public to enjoy throughout February.
Caroline Baldwin shared that her 10-year-old son wrote a message on one of the doves. His message read, "wouldn't it be nice if people were nice," emphasizing kindness and mutual respect. Baldwin appreciated how involving children in the artwork helps them express their hopes for peace.
She mentioned that her son's school, Mitton Manor Primary, actively encouraged students to participate. "I think it’s wonderful," she added. "Walking in, it’s truly breathtaking and picturesque."
The Peace Doves installation will remain at Tewkesbury Abbey until February 27.
