Typing four simple characters can cause your iPhone to crash.

A security researcher has issued a new warning about a bug that can cause Apple devices to crash by typing four specific characters. This bug particularly affects iPhones and iPads. Web security researcher Konstantin revealed the issue on social media, explaining that typing “”“::” (two double quotation marks and two colons) in certain search fields can cause the device’s Springboard to crash, forcing a reload to the Lock Screen. Some users have reported that even entering the first three characters triggers the bug.

Despite its disruptive nature, experts like Ryan Stortz and Patrick Wardle have clarified that this is not a security vulnerability. The bug has been observed in the latest versions of iOS 17 and the iOS 18 beta. It is expected that the upcoming iOS 17.6.2 update will address and fix this issue.
