Octogenarian South Korean model defies age stereotypes

An octogenarian model from South Korea is challenging age stereotypes by thriving in the fashion industry. Embracing her unique style and confidence, she serves as an inspiring figure for others, demonstrating that age should not limit one's ambitions or career choices. Her success highlights the importance of inclusivity in fashion and encourages people of all ages to pursue their passions without fear of judgment.

South Korean grandmother Choi Soon-hwa dreamed of becoming a fashion model in her 20s, but life’s responsibilities delayed her aspirations for five decades. At 81, Choi made history as the oldest contestant in the Miss Universe Korea competition after age restrictions were lifted, which previously limited participants to ages 18-28.

"Upon hearing the age limits were removed, I thought, ‘wow, that’s great. I cannot miss this chance,’" Choi expressed. Although she didn’t win, she reached the finals and received the 'Best Dressed Award' among younger competitors.

Choi had to set aside her dreams of modeling and acting to take on regular jobs to support her children and manage financial obligations. It wasn’t until she worked as a hospital caregiver that her dream started to come true, prompted by a patient who encouraged her to become a senior model at the age of 72.

Choi enrolled in a modeling academy and practiced walking the runway and posing in front of a mirror during quiet nights at the hospital. Since then, her modeling career has flourished, leading to appearances in various fashion shows, magazine features, and television coverage.

"I succeeded in the second half of my life. In the first half, I was just running around without achieving any goals, but I finally scored in the second half," she told Reuters.

Yun Mi-young, 59, another senior model, cited Choi as her inspiration, saying, "The first time I saw her on TV, she looked so cool. I thought I want to be a senior model just like her."

Choi shares tips for staying fit, emphasizing the importance of starting each day with a healthy breakfast of boiled eggs and fruit, and regularly walking in a nearby park.

As South Korea approaches becoming a "super-ageing" society, with over a fifth of its population expected to be over 65 next year, Choi hopes her success will inspire others in her age group. "I hope other seniors can find courage through my story," she stated.
