Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's choice to reside in Portugal raises questions about their intentions and future plans. With no indications of returning to the UK, this move may reflect a strategic decision to enhance their public image and influence. Analyzing their life in Portugal provides insight into whether this is a calculated power move or a genuine desire for a fresh start away from royal scrutiny.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have purchased a house in Portugal, a decision that highlights their reduced connections to the royal family. Situated close to Princess Eugenie's vacation home, this property facilitates their charitable efforts and enables them to plan future tours across Europe.
With no intention of returning to Britain, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly acquired a new home in Portugal to maintain a presence on that side of the Atlantic.
According to reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex purchased a property in Alentejo, located just over an hour's drive from Melides, where Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have their own residence.
This new home is in close proximity to Princess Eugenie's holiday retreat, as she remains one of the few royals who has preserved a close relationship with the Sussexes.
Harry and Meghan were evicted from their cottage in Windsor by King Charles last year. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline that their decision to buy in the area “emphasizes that they still have goodwill” with a select few members of the royal family. He added that it “makes clear that they are connected closely to part of the royal family.”
In an interview for ITV’s documentary Tabloids on Trial earlier this year, Prince Harry expressed concerns about security in the UK, stating, “It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”
Thus, their choice to establish a base in the EU, away from Britain, is not unexpected and holds significant meaning. Following their withdrawal from royal duties, their relationship with the royal family has been strained, with Princess Eugenie being the only family member to maintain friendly ties with both parties.
This new home in Portugal will not only facilitate the Sussexes' ability to conduct more tours, similar to their trips in Nigeria and Colombia, but it will also support Harry's ambitions to continue his charity work in Britain. Moreover, this residence represents more than just a financial investment for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Living just an hour apart may strengthen their bond with the Brooksbanks. If Archie and Lili grow up alongside August and Ernest, it could potentially pave the way for a reunion with other royal family members.
“Their exile in California is far less distant,” says Fitzwilliams. “The purchase of a home in Portugal means we may see a good deal of Harry, Meghan, and their family… It will be fascinating to see what their plan is in the coming months.”
