Sustainable Packaging: Impact on Oxidation and Product Shelf-Life

Sustainable packaging plays a crucial role in influencing product oxidation and shelf-life. By using eco-friendly materials, companies aim to preserve product quality while reducing environmental impact. This approach not only helps maintain freshness by minimizing oxidation but also extends shelf-life, benefiting both consumers and the planet. Sustainable packaging addresses the challenge of balancing environmental responsibility with effective product preservation for long-lasting quality.

Navigating Quality Challenges While Meeting Consumer Demand for Eco-friendly Choices

The increasing consumer focus on sustainability has driven a shift toward eco-friendly packaging options. A significant portion of consumers (78%) view a sustainable and healthy lifestyle as a priority. While packaging is essential for preserving the freshness and safety of food and beverages, it also contributes heavily to environmental pollution.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that food packaging accounts for nearly one-third of all municipal solid waste. Much of this waste ends up in landfills, emitting greenhouse gases like methane, which harms the environment. Furthermore, a large amount of plastic packaging makes its way into the oceans, creating plastic islands that pose a serious threat to marine ecosystems.

Strategies for Meeting Consumer Demand and Reducing the Environmental Impact of Packaging

As sustainability awareness grows, consumers are increasingly choosing environmentally friendly packaging. A survey by Innova Packaging revealed that one in three global consumers is willing to pay more for products with sustainable packaging.

Although this trend is attractive to businesses, there are challenges in balancing eco-friendly packaging with operational efficiency and maintaining food quality standards throughout the supply chain.

Thankfully, there are strategies companies can implement to enhance packaging sustainability:

  1. Use recyclable materials: Selecting recyclable packaging materials helps support a circular economy and minimize waste.
  2. Use biodegradable or compostable materials: These materials can naturally decompose, reducing the long-term environmental impact of packaging waste.
  3. Reduce material usage: Decreasing the amount of packaging materials used can lower environmental harm while ensuring functionality and safety.

Evaluating the Influence of Packaging Material Choices on Food Quality and Sustainability

When shifting from traditional to sustainable packaging, it's important to consider how these changes impact shelf-life and consumer experience. At Kalsec, we recognize the need to assess the effects of sustainable packaging on product quality and shelf-life.

Our expertise in food preservation led us to hypothesize that sustainable materials might compromise product stability and shorten shelf-life. To test this, we conducted studies comparing conventional and sustainable packaging. Our results showed that food stored in compostable packaging experienced higher oxidation rates, leading to reduced quality and a shorter shelf-life.

However, we found that incorporating natural antioxidants, such as Herbalox® rosemary extract, into food stored in compostable packaging significantly extended its stability, matching that of traditional plastics. It’s essential to acknowledge that packaging materials impact both sustainability goals and food quality.

Oxidation Implications of Different Sustainable Packaging Materials

  1. Recyclable materials: These materials support waste reduction, but the shelf-life of food may be affected, depending on the barrier properties of the recycled materials.
  2. Biodegradable or compostable materials: While eco-friendly, these materials may lead to quicker food degradation due to less effective oxidation barriers. Adding natural antioxidants like Herbalox® or Duralox® Antioxidant Blends can help maintain food stability.
  3. Reduce material usage: While reducing packaging material is environmentally friendly, it may result in increased spoilage due to higher oxygen permeability.
