World Cup skier Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, Elisa Arlian, tragically plunged approximately 2,300 feet from Italy's Mount Zerbion, as reported by local sources. Pession, a 28-year-old athlete representing Italy in speed skiing, and Arlian, a 26-year-old ski instructor and educator, met their untimely demise in what was described as a sorrowful mountain mishap, according to a statement from the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI).

Boston Brand Media also found the incident took place at the summit near the resort village Champoluc in the Aosta Valley region of Italy. Concerned when the couple failed to return, their relatives alerted emergency services, prompting swift helicopter dispatches, as detailed by Italian media outlet Rai.

Three search teams, involving alpine rescue, police, and firefighters, were mobilized, with the aid of pinpointed cellphone signals. The rescuers discovered them bound together, a customary practice among mountain climbers.

According to the news release, Pession achieved a 15th place ranking in the final World Cup standings for 2021. At the 2022 World Championships in Vars, he secured the 22nd position. Additionally, he harbored aspirations of becoming a mountain guide. The FISI statement conveyed President Flavio Roda's condolences to Pession's family. Alberto Bertin, the president of Aosta Valley's regional council, expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and the wider sports community, emphasizing the tragic loss of two young lives who shared a passion for the mountains.
