Washington: President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. military to lift a hold placed by former President Joe Biden on the supply of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, a White House source confirmed to Reuters on Saturday.
Biden initially halted the delivery, citing concerns over civilian casualties, particularly in Gaza's Rafah region, during Israel's war against Hamas. Trump announced the move on Truth Social, stating, “A lot of things ordered and paid for by Israel, but not sent by Biden, are now on their way!”
Both Trump and Biden have supported Israel, even as U.S. arms shipments have drawn criticism from human rights advocates due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Calls for an arms embargo have been met with protests but no policy changes.
A ceasefire, which began a week ago, facilitated hostage exchanges between Israel and Hamas. The conflict erupted after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, resulting in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and approximately 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.
Israel’s military response in Gaza has reportedly killed more than 47,000 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry, displacing nearly the entire population and triggering accusations of war crimes, which Israel denies. Washington has maintained its support for Israel, framing its actions as defense against Iran-backed militant groups in the region, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
