Where Do Venezuelans Emigrate To?
Venezuelans are increasingly emigrating to various countries due to economic instability and political unrest. Popular destinations include the United States, Colombia, and Spain, where they seek better job opportunities and living conditions. The migration trend reflects ongoing challenges in Venezuela and the search for stability and safety in more favorable environments.
Since 2015, over seven million people have left Venezuela due to its deepening socio-economic and security crisis, according to recent reports from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Colombia is the primary destination for Venezuelan migrants, with approximately 2.9 million moving there, as reported by the Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants (R4V). Peru follows as the second major destination, with around 1.5 million Venezuelans relocating there. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and increasing economic instability in Peru have led many Venezuelans to seek stability further north.
By September 2021, the United States had welcomed over 545,000 Venezuelans, making it the third most significant destination for Venezuelan migrants. While neighboring countries are the primary destinations, Spain also ranks among the top ten global destinations for Venezuelan emigrants.
