Whoopi Goldberg has warned Nikki Glaser to avoid social media after hosting the Golden Globes. Goldberg emphasized that Glaser would face inevitable criticism, regardless of her performance. She encouraged Glaser to focus on doing her best during the event without getting distracted by online reactions. Glaser is set to make history as the first solo female host of the Golden Globes.
Whoopi Goldberg is advising comedian Nikki Glaser to steer clear of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok after she hosts the Golden Globes next month.
The EGOT winner, who has hosted the Oscars four times and the Grammys once, took a moment during Wednesday’s The View episode to share some helpful advice with Glaser as she prepares to host the ceremony on Jan. 5.
“You’ll be the guide, and you’ll take the hits. It doesn’t matter what you do—some people will always complain,” Goldberg told Glaser. “Avoid social media. Don’t pay attention to anything.”
Goldberg’s cohosts agreed with her advice, suggesting that Glaser turn off any Google Alerts for her name so she wouldn’t be notified about reviews or reactions after the event. Glaser, moved by the advice, responded, “Thank you,” while placing a hand on her heart.
“You’re learning from the best,” Sunny Hostin chimed in, pointing at Goldberg. Glaser responded, “I know, this is amazing.”
Earlier in the conversation, Glaser expressed surprise that some celebrities choose to turn down hosting gigs for events like the Globes.
“A lot of people turn it down because it’s daunting,” Goldberg explained. “You have to know when it’s your time to shine with jokes and monologues. You see things others don’t, and when you come back on stage, you talk about it. You keep the momentum going.”
She dismissed Hostin’s suggestion that it’s the host’s performance that keeps the audience engaged, joking, “What keeps them seated is, ‘Did I win?’”
Goldberg is the ideal person to offer Glaser guidance ahead of the ceremony, thanks to her extensive experience hosting the Grammys in 1992 and the Oscars four times, alongside stars like Jimmy Kimmel and Jack Lemmon.
Glaser is poised to make history as the first woman to host the Golden Globes solo next month, following a breakout year in 2024, where her sharp wit earned her recognition in Netflix's roast of Tom Brady. Previously, women have co-hosted the Globes, such as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who served as the first female duo to host the event in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2021.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Glaser shared her approach to winning over viewers. “I need to introduce myself first, be softer and more self-deprecating,” she said. “Since I’m not as famous, I can’t just jump in aggressively. Otherwise, people will think, ‘Who is this lady, and why does she think she can talk to us like that?’ I can’t bring the same intensity as I did in the Tom Brady roast. With more recognition comes the ability to be sharper.”
The Golden Globes will air on Jan. 5, 2025, on CBS. The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
