Beyoncé was locked out of the Country Music Awards event, causing a stir and raising questions about the situation. The incident has garnered significant attention, leading to speculation about why she was excluded. The event's organizers and Beyoncé's team have yet to provide detailed explanations, leaving fans and media intrigued by the unusual occurrence.
Despite having one of the year’s biggest country hits with "Texas Hold 'Em," Beyoncé was notably absent from the Country Music Awards nominations announced on Monday. She had been anticipated to receive recognition, with hopes she might be the first Black woman nominated for Album of the Year for "Cowboy Carter." However, Morgan Wallen, who was suspended from his label three years ago for using a racial slur, ended up with the most nominations.
He later apologized and reconciled with his record label. Last year, Wallen's double album One Thing At A Time dominated the US charts for 16 weeks and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Country Music Awards. This year, he has received four nominations as a featured artist on "I Had Some Help" by Post Malone, a pop artist not traditionally associated with country music, like Beyoncé. Shaboozey, who is featured on Cowboy Carter, also garnered two nominations: Best New Artist and Single of the Year for "A Bar Song (Tipsy)." This track displaced Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em" atop the US country charts in April, making Shaboozey the first Black male artist to top both the country and Billboard Hot 100 charts simultaneously, marking the first instance of consecutive Black artists holding the number one spot.
The backlash Beyoncé faced that led to Cowboy Carter’s creation dates back to her 2016 CMA appearance. During that event, she performed "Daddy Lessons" with The Chicks (formerly the Dixie Chicks), and the performance was met with significant online criticism and racism. Natalie Maines, lead singer of The Chicks, later called the treatment Beyoncé received "disgusting." Beyoncé revealed on Instagram that Cowboy Carter was inspired by this negative experience, motivating her to explore the history of country music more deeply. The album is part of a trilogy that examines American musical roots and highlights the often-overlooked contributions of Black artists.
Billboard recognized Cowboy Carter as a country album for charting, with its single "Texas Hold 'Em" dominating the country music charts for 10 weeks. Beyoncé also garnered 12 nominations for the 2024 People's Choice Country Awards, the most of any artist. The CMA has not explained why her album was overlooked, but their criteria for the Album of the Year award includes factors such as artist performance, musical background, engineering, and packaging. The awards are decided by CMA members who are professionals in the country music industry.
The artists who did make the grade for the album of the year shortlist were Kacey Musgraves’ Deeper Well, Luke Combs’ Fathers & Sons, Chris Stapleton’s Higher, Cody Johnson’s Leather and Jelly Roll’s Whitsitt Chapel.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, 20 November.
The main nominees include:
Entertainer of the year
Single of the year
Album of the year
Song of the year
Female vocalist of the year
Male vocalist of the year
Vocal group of the year
New artist of the year
