The surge in norovirus infections is not limited to the UK, as similar increases have also been reported in the United States.
A surge in Kawasaki norovirus infections is prompting UK hospital authorities to issue urgent warnings, advising the public to limit hospital visits to curb further spread. The highly infectious virus, known as the “winter vomiting bug,” is causing a sharp increase in cases, with symptoms including sudden and severe vomiting and diarrhea. In the first seven weeks of 2025 alone, 400 cases have been reported, raising concerns among public health officials as the new GII.17 variant continues to spread.
The British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has expressed growing alarm, citing the mounting strain on the country’s already overburdened winter healthcare system. Officials stress that the spike in norovirus infections is not confined to the UK—similar increases have been observed in the United States, suggesting a broader international spread. Public health experts emphasize the importance of strict hygiene measures, including frequent handwashing and staying home when sick, to help contain the virus.
A spokesperson for the HSE told The Sun: “During winter 2024-2025, there has been an increased level of norovirus activity across the northern hemisphere. This increase is partly due to the emergence of a new norovirus variant, GII.17. Because this is a new strain, people have only partial immunity, increasing the likelihood of illness.”
Health officials first detected a rise in norovirus cases in Ireland in early December 2024, with the UK, other parts of Europe, and the US now reporting similar trends. Experts warn that continued vigilance is necessary to prevent further outbreaks.
