Donald Trump has declined an invitation from Fox News to participate in a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris scheduled for late October. His decision comes as both political figures prepare for the 2024 election. While Harris was set to represent the Democratic side, Trump has opted out, continuing his strategy of avoiding traditional debates during this election cycle.
Republican former President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will not debate Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, shortly after Fox News extended an invitation for the two to participate in a potential second debate on either October 24 or 27.
Trump and Harris first debated on September 10. Trump has stated that no further debates will occur before the November 5 election. He previously declined a CNN invitation for an October 23 debate, which Harris had accepted.
Polls indicate a close race between Trump and Harris as they compete in the November 5 U.S. elections.
In its announcement, Fox News noted that a second debate would offer each candidate the chance to present their final arguments. Last week, Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, debated Trump’s running mate, U.S. Senator JD Vance.
“There will be no rematch,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “So there is nothing to debate.” He added that it was too late in the election process to hold another debate.
Trump previously faced then-Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. President Joe Biden in a debate in late June.
Biden stepped down as the Democratic candidate less than a month after his poor debate performance. Trump gained a lead over Biden following that debate, but Harris replaced Biden as the candidate, tightening the race, with some polls now showing her with a slight advantage.
During the September 10 debate, Harris put Trump on the defensive by attacking his qualifications for office, his stance on abortion restrictions, and his ongoing legal challenges.
