TikTok to Shut Down in US on Jan 19, Report Says

TikTok is reportedly planning to shut down its app in the United States on January 19. The decision follows ongoing regulatory challenges and concerns regarding data privacy and national security. Users in the US will no longer have access to the popular social media platform starting on this date. The potential shutdown has sparked discussions about its impact on content creators, users, and the broader social media landscape in the country.

TikTok is reportedly planning to close its US operations on January 19, according to BNO News, which cites The Information. The report adds that US users will no longer be able to access the app and will be redirected to a website about the ban. Neither TikTok nor its parent company, ByteDance, have released an official statement so far.

This comes as the Supreme Court is said to be preparing to uphold a Biden administration law that would ban TikTok in the US unless it sells its American operations. The Information also reports that ByteDance plans to allow users to download all their data, enabling them to take their personal information with them.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Bloomberg cited sources suggesting that Chinese officials might sell TikTok’s US operations to Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest person. TikTok quickly dismissed the rumor, calling it “pure fiction.” In a lighthearted response, YouTuber MrBeast jokingly suggested he would buy TikTok to prevent its ban.

"Okay fine, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned,” MrBeast posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Hours later, the YouTuber and entrepreneur claimed that several billionaires had reached out to him for a deal. “Unironically I’ve had so many billionaires reach out to me since I tweeted this, let’s see if we can pull this off 🙌🏻,” he added, without naming anyone.
