YouTube is exploring a new feature that would allow users to set a daily timer specifically for watching Shorts. This tool aims to support users who want to better manage their screen time and reduce excessive consumption of short-form content. As short videos continue to gain popularity, the timer could encourage healthier digital habits by offering more control over viewing limits. The move reflects YouTube’s ongoing efforts to promote user well-being and mindful content consumption.
YouTube is considering a new tool that would let users control the amount of time they spend watching Shorts by setting a daily limit.
Insights from the beta version of the YouTube app, as reported by Android Authority, reveal that the platform may be working on a feature designed to curb the habit of endlessly swiping through Shorts.
A spokesperson told TechCrunch that while this feature isn’t available to the public yet, the company is evaluating it for possible future release.
The app’s code shows that users could choose how many hours they want to spend on Shorts each day. Once that time is used up, access to Shorts would be paused until the next day. Still, users might retain the ability to view specific short videos individually, suggesting a soft restriction rather than a complete block.
Currently, YouTube provides a “Take a Break” reminder for standard videos, which users can enable to manage their viewing habits.
This potential feature aligns with a wider movement where users are increasingly turning to screen-time management apps to reduce social media use. Some people even rely on physical gadgets that restrict app usage temporarily, reflecting growing concerns about digital overuse. Meanwhile, companies like Apple and Google already offer built-in tools to help users moderate their scrolling behavior.
