May 11 (Reuters) - Employees at Apple's store in Towson, Maryland, have voted to authorize a strike, as confirmed by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (AIM) in a statement released on Saturday. The union, representing Apple's retail staff in Maryland, has not yet determined the strike date. IAM cited concerns over work-life balance, unpredictable schedules, and inadequate wages relative to the region's cost of living as the primary reasons for the action.

An Apple spokesperson stated, "We will engage with the union representing our team in Towson respectfully and in good faith." In June 2022, Apple workers in Maryland voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union, marking the first unionization of retail employees within the tech company in the United States. Conversely, employees at Apple's Short Hills store in New Jersey voted against unionization, as reported by Bloomberg News on Saturday.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA), which lodged complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) accusing Apple of unlawful union-busting activities at various locations, attributed the defeat to the company's conduct, as stated in the report. According to John Nagy, the operations lead at the Short Hills store and a member of the organizing committee, Apple retail employees at the New Jersey store had submitted requests for union representation with the Communications Workers of America on April 8.

Apple declined to provide a comment regarding the vote against unionization. The Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment regarding the Bloomberg report on the New Jersey workers' vote.
