"Joker 2" Receives Mixed Reviews in Venice: Odd, Slog, or Genius?

"Joker 2" debuted at the Venice Film Festival, garnering mixed reviews. Some critics found it a slow, odd musical, while others appreciated its bold, unconventional approach. Descriptions ranged from "slog" to "impressively strange," with some calling it "bad on purpose." The film's unique style left audiences divided, sparking debate on its artistic merit.

Todd Phillips' "Joker 2: Folie à Deux" received mixed reactions following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

This sequel, a musical featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, has been downplayed as a musical by Warner Bros., despite Lady Gaga's prominent role.

Critics' opinions vary from praise to disappointment. IndieWire slammed it as "boring, flat, and a criminal waste of Lady Gaga," accusing the film of failing to address audience frustration. "Joker," now Arthur Fleck, meets Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) in prison, with musical performances woven throughout. The Guardian criticized the film's stagnant, repetitive setting in Gotham's jail, and noted Phoenix's one-note yet forceful performance.

Variety described the film as a "clunky and earthbound" musical, while The Wrap, despite its "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, called it "a sad, pensive, and impressively odd" movie, using musical theatrics to deflate the protagonist's ambitions. The Hollywood Reporter, however, praised Gaga's electrifying presence, noting her performance breathed life into the otherwise somber film, particularly during the musical scenes.

Regardless of reviews, the film is expected to attract significant attention, with audiences eager to experience Lady Gaga’s music. In a spoiler-laden interview, Phillips hinted that Arthur Fleck may not survive the film, dismissing the possibility of a third installment.
