Katy Perry is set to make history as one of six women chosen for Blue Origin’s upcoming all-women space mission. This groundbreaking flight marks a significant moment in space travel, showcasing the growing presence of women in the field. The mission aims to inspire future generations and promote diversity in space exploration. Alongside Perry, the crew includes accomplished women from various backgrounds, all coming together for this inspiring journey beyond Earth.
Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket will carry Katy Perry and a group of other women past the Kármán line, the internationally accepted threshold where space begins. Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of billionaire Jeff Bezos, is set to join pop icon Katy Perry on an all-female mission to space this Monday.
Their flight includes a diverse team of accomplished women: media personality Gayle King, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and entrepreneur and ex-NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe. The journey, launching from Blue Origin’s Texas site at 8:30 a.m. local time, will last 11 minutes and take the crew to the edge of space and back.
This historic launch, titled NS-31, is part of Blue Origin’s New Shepard programme and is intended to inspire future generations through its all-women crew. It marks the first time since 1963, when Valentina Tereshkova flew solo, that a space mission will be entirely without male passengers.
The rocket is expected to climb 100 kilometers (or 62 miles) above Earth, briefly entering space before returning. During their short time in space, the women will experience four minutes of weightlessness and will be able to gaze out at Earth through expansive windows in the capsule.
The return to Earth will be controlled via three parachutes, ensuring a smooth descent. Lauren Sánchez, who leads the flight, shared in an interview with Elle that each woman was chosen for her proven ability to inspire others. Katy Perry revealed to Elle that she had dreamt of going to space for nearly two decades, expressing excitement when she finally received an invitation.
The opportunity is a long-held dream for other crew members too, including Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn. However, for Gayle King, the decision to join wasn’t easy - she admitted to initially saying no and still feeling nervous about the mission. Despite entering space, the women will not officially be designated as astronauts by U.S. agencies like the FAA, NASA, or the military, due to specific eligibility criteria.
Blue Origin has already sent 52 individuals into space, including Bezos himself and Star Trek actor William Shatner, who flew in 2022 at age 90. Shatner later shared that his journey stirred unexpected emotions, describing space as a stark and haunting void, far different from the wonder he had anticipated.
