World's Highest Altitude Vineyard: Discovering Tibet's Unique Wine Region

Tibet is home to the world's highest-altitude vineyard, where unique conditions and innovative farming techniques create exceptional wines. The region's extreme elevation and remote location contribute to a distinct growing environment, making its wines stand out globally. The vineyard's sustainable practices and cultural significance highlight the growing wine industry in this high-altitude region, offering a rare and unique addition to the global wine market.

Guinness World Records recently featured a video highlighting a remarkable location: the world’s highest vineyard, situated at an elevation exceeding 11,000 feet.

There are numerous beautiful wine regions worldwide, but one in Tibet stands out as the highest: the Pure Land & Super-high Altitude Vineyard in Tibet (Xizang), China. Guinness World Records (GWR) shared a video offering a glimpse into this extraordinary vineyard. Officially recognized as the highest vineyard globally, it sits at 3,563.31 meters (11,690 feet) above sea level, located near the Lhasa River in Caina Town, Qushui County, Lhasa.

According to GWR, the grapes grown here have adapted to the region’s extreme temperature differences between day and night. The heat of the sun boosts the sugar content of the grapes, while the cooler nights enhance their acidity. GWR further explains that the grapes have essentially developed their own "sunglasses" to protect them from the harsh conditions. When the vineyard’s creation began, experts tested 60 grape varieties and found four that could thrive in the high-altitude environment.

The vineyard’s establishment has positively impacted the local community, generating employment opportunities for Tibetan villagers. While the vineyard earned its world record title in 2018, the recent video by GWR has renewed interest in the location.

Guinness World Records regularly highlights extraordinary places. For example, it previously shared images of the world's largest chicken-shaped building in the Philippines, a hotel structure with 15 rooms, which won a world record in September 2024.
