A statement from the police detailed that Payne, described as a composer and guitarist, died following his fall from a hotel in the Palermo neighborhood. Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, told Argentina's Todo Noticias TV channel that Payne fell into an internal courtyard, and despite the quick arrival of an emergency team, his injuries were fatal. An autopsy is being conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Prior to his death, police had been alerted to a situation involving an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.” Upon arrival, officers discovered Payne had fallen over the balcony. The hotel's manager reported hearing a loud noise before the discovery.
