The decision comes ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, as Meta seeks to repair its relationship with the incoming leader, who has criticized the company's political content policies and even threatened its CEO with imprisonment.
Meta Platforms has announced the termination of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, including initiatives for hiring, training, and supplier selection, according to a memo shared with employees on the company's internal forum on Friday.
The decision comes ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, as Meta seeks to mend relations with the incoming leader. Trump has previously criticized the company’s political content policies and even threatened its CEO with imprisonment.
“The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing,” wrote Janelle Gale, Vice President of Human Resources at Meta, in the memo seen by Reuters. Gale pointed to recent Supreme Court decisions as indicative of a broader shift in how U.S. courts will address DEI programs in the future.
“The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others,” she added.
While Meta will continue to source job candidates from diverse backgrounds, the company will discontinue the use of its "Diverse Slate Approach," Gale noted. Additionally, Meta will no longer maintain a dedicated team focused on DEI. Chief Diversity Officer Maxine Williams will transition into a new role at the company, focusing on accessibility and engagement.
This move has sparked debate within and outside the company, with critics questioning Meta’s commitment to fostering inclusivity amid growing scrutiny of corporate DEI initiatives.
