Traveling to visit friends and family is one of the most common motivations for trips worldwide. This type of travel allows people to reconnect with loved ones, create lasting memories, and experience a sense of belonging and comfort. Whether for holidays, special occasions, or simply to catch up, visiting friends and family remains a top priority for many travelers.
During summer vacation, many people head to beaches or explore the great outdoors, but in the U.S., the most common type of leisure trip is visiting friends and family. According to a survey by Statista Consumer Insights conducted between March 2024 and April 2023, 57 percent of U.S. respondents had visited friends and family in the past year. This was followed by city trips, with 32 percent of respondents reporting such travels, which can often overlap with visiting loved ones. Beach holidays were also popular, with 31 percent of Americans taking one during the same period.
While beach trips are a favorite, nature vacations are also on the rise, with a quarter of Americans choosing to spend time in the great outdoors. Active vacations, which include activities like hiking, biking, and adventure sports, and camping trips each attracted 19 percent of respondents. Wellness breaks, however, were less common, with only 12 percent of Americans booking one in the past year.
In addition to being the most common type of trip, advice from friends and family is also the leading source of travel inspiration for Americans, according to Booking.com. This advice often comes in the form of invitations to visit, making personal connections a key driver of domestic travel. While package holidays are less popular in the U.S. compared to Europe and China, the country still boasts a larger domestic travel market than the Asian tourism giant, highlighting the significance of homegrown tourism.
