Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project has taken a tangible step forward with the unveiling of its first physical showcase—Sindalah, a luxury Red Sea island. Announced ahead of the “Davos in the Desert” investor forum, Sindalah will feature world-class dining, hotels, and yachting amenities, though questions remain about NEOM's long-term viability.

Size and Amenities: Sindalah spans 840,000 square meters (200 acres) and is designed to host 2,400 guests daily by 2028. Planned accommodations include 440 rooms, 88 villas, and 218 serviced apartments, with dining options led by Michelin-star chefs. The island’s design combines breathtaking views and modern architecture by designer Luca Dini.

NEOM’s Broader Vision: The Line: Known for “The Line,” NEOM envisions a 170-kilometer-long skyscraper duo stretching inland from the Red Sea. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman initially projected The Line would host a million residents by 2030, with a long-term population goal of nine million by 2045. However, recent estimates suggest 300,000 residents by decade’s end, with only 2.4 kilometers of the structure completed by then.

Sindalah’s Architectural Excellence: Sindalah combines natural beauty and technology, designed by LUCA DINI Design & Architecture. As NEOM’s first showcase, the island aims to attract the global yachting community, positioned 17 hours by boat from Mediterranean yachting hubs. It includes an 86-berth marina and 75 offshore buoys for superyachts, emphasizing its appeal as a luxury destination.

A Step Towards Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030: NEOM and Sindalah are key to Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s plan to diversify its economy beyond oil under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. While other large-scale projects are also underway, some timelines may extend past 2030. Sindalah marks Saudi Arabia’s entry into global tourism and luxury, aligning with its post-oil ambitions.
