Porto Alegre Military Base Repurposed for Commercial Flights Following Civil Airport Closure Due to Floods

Porto Alegre Military Base transforms into a hub for commercial flights after floods necessitate the closure of the civil airport. This strategic shift ensures uninterrupted air travel despite adverse conditions, showcasing adaptive resilience in the face of challenges.

Canoas air base is located about 6km north of the flood-hit Salgado Filho airport

Fraport Brasil must ensure that passengers receive adequate information, including details about fares, and that signage is installed to provide assistance. Restrictions will be enforced, including a ban on outsourcing to third parties.

Utilizing Canoas as an alternative forms part of the Brazilian government's emergency strategy to tackle the flooding crisis.

According to a resolution by ANAC on 20 May, civil air operations will continue at the air base while operations at Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre are suspended.

If the revenues generated are insufficient to cover the operational costs at Canoas, the airport operator will be eligible for reimbursement from government budgets and may receive advance funding to address immediate expenses.

On the same date, ANAC issued another resolution, prohibiting take-off and landing at Salgado Filho from 21 May onwards. This measure is described as "indefinite" and will persist until Fraport Brasil can demonstrate the airport's ability to operate while meeting safety standards in civil aviation.

ANAC attributes this decision to the impossibility of utilizing the runway system and, consequently, the entire airport, due to the flooding. The assessment of Salgado Filho's situation will only be feasible after the water levels in the airport complex recede and the extent of damage is evaluated.
