Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5 recently received an AI-driven update, promising an enhanced user experience. This update aims to improve various aspects of the device's functionality, including camera performance, battery life, and overall system optimization.

Commentary: Samsung's Galaxy AI features were designed with standard phones in mind. But certain features translate well to the small screen.

Samsung has introduced its Galaxy AI software features, powered by AI, to its foldable phone lineup, including the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, as well as the Galaxy S23 series. While these enhancements offer insights into Samsung's vision for smartphone software evolution, they seem primarily tailored for conventional smartphones rather than foldable ones. Despite being available on foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 5, features such as Circle to Search and Generative Edit appear optimized for larger, full-size internal screens rather than the smaller cover displays, as observed during testing.

The expansion of Galaxy AI to devices like the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 underscores Samsung's belief in these features as essential for the everyday smartphone user. Rather than limiting Galaxy AI to its latest releases, Samsung aims to reach a wider audience of Galaxy users.

While Galaxy AI shows promise, it feels like just the beginning of its potential, particularly for foldable phones. There is anticipation for Samsung to further refine Galaxy AI for foldable screens and introduce unique features tailored specifically for the Z Flip and Z Fold series.

It's interesting to see how features like Generative Edit translate to the smaller screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, especially considering its unique 3.4-inch cover display. Surprisingly, Generative Edit functions almost identically on the cover screen as it does on the main screen, allowing users to enlarge, move, or delete subjects from images within Samsung's Gallery app. However, the usability experience on the smaller display is a bit compromised. While it's still relatively easy to select objects for removal, tapping the eraser button can be challenging depending on the object's location. Additionally, instructional prompts may be cut off due to the limited screen real estate, making it slightly less intuitive to use.

Accessing Note Assist on the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 allows users to utilize features like summarization, translation, and formatting within Samsung's Notes app. However, during my testing, I found that its functionality was somewhat limited compared to using it on the main screen. Due to the smaller display size, Note Assist could only highlight a portion of a note for summarization, as that's all that could fit on the screen.

On the other hand, Browsing Assist proved to be one of the most seamless Galaxy AI features on the Z Flip 5's cover screen. This feature efficiently summarized and translated CNET articles almost instantly, providing the same summary regardless of whether I was reading on the cover screen or the main display. Additionally, I was impressed by how quickly it translated the article as I scrolled down the page on the cover screen.
