Sweden Recommends: No TV or Screens for Toddlers at All

Sweden advises parents to entirely avoid exposing toddlers to TVs and screens, highlighting concerns over the potential impact on their early development. The recommendation underscores the importance of fostering screen-free environments for young children to promote healthier cognitive, social, and physical growth. By steering clear of digital devices, Sweden aims to ensure a better developmental foundation for the youngest members of society.

According to the new recommendations, children aged two to five should have their screen time limited to no more than one hour per day.

The health agency also recommended that kids not use screens before going to bed.

Sweden's Public Health Agency has issued new guidelines advising parents that toddlers should not be exposed to screens at all, with children under two kept entirely away from digital media and TV. For kids aged two to five, screen time should be limited to one hour per day, while those aged six to 12 should not exceed one to two hours.

Teenagers aged 13 to 18 should be restricted to two to three hours daily. Public Health Minister Jakob Forssmed expressed concern over excessive screen use, particularly among teens who average six and a half hours of screen time outside school, leading to insufficient sleep, reduced physical activity, and less time for social interactions.

The agency also recommended that screens be avoided before bedtime and kept out of bedrooms at night, citing research linking excessive screen use to poor sleep, depression, and body dissatisfaction. The government is also considering banning smartphones in primary schools.
