Hyundai's midsize sedan N-Line combines both performance and comfort, wrapped in an appealing package.
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan underwent a significant midcycle refresh, receiving updates to its exterior and interior styling. Additionally, some trims now offer all-wheel drive. The performance-oriented N-Line trim also received updates, offering a slightly more aggressive look while maintaining comfort for daily commuting.
During a recent testing period, we had the opportunity to drive the updated Sonata N-Line for a couple of enjoyable weeks. Throughout this time, we covered plenty of freeway miles, tackled twisty road loops, and navigated city streets. Additionally, we took it to the track to assess its performance against one of the few other mainstream sport sedans available—the Kia K5 GT, its distant cousin from Korea.
Unchanged Dimensions, Revamped Interior
At first glance, the 2024 Sonata appears entirely new, thanks to its revamped exterior and interior compared to the 2023 model. On the outside, Hyundai's sedan boasts a fresh unibrow and concealed headlight design, contributing to a more contemporary and sophisticated appearance. Inside, numerous updates have been made from the B-pillar forward, encompassing the dashboard, infotainment and driver's displays, air conditioning controls, and front seats.
One standout feature of the Sonata's redesigned interior is the dual-screen setup, which we particularly admire. Hyundai's designers have integrated the instrument cluster and infotainment displays into a single curved panel, creating the illusion of a unified display. This setup offers over 24 inches of screen space, a rarity in mainstream vehicles, and is complemented by updated graphics and user-friendly menus. Additionally, the 2024 Sonata now includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enhancing the sedan's already impressive technological capabilities.
The center console area of the Sonata has undergone a significant redesign, with notable changes including the relocation of the shifter to the steering column to create additional space for larger cupholders and storage compartments. All four USB ports have been upgraded to Type C, and a wireless charger has been integrated. The introduction of hard buttons provides quicker access to the infotainment system, while the A/C controls now feature their own digital touchscreen with haptic feedback. However, one drawback is that the A/C controls are positioned slightly low, requiring the driver to momentarily divert attention from the road when adjusting the fan speed.
N-Line-specific interior details include red trim accents on the dashboard and air vents, N badges on the steering wheel and front seats, and red stitching throughout the cabin. While these enhancements add a sporty touch, some enthusiasts may desire more performance-oriented features, such as a D-shaped steering wheel.
In terms of interior space, both front and rear passengers enjoy ample room, and the cargo area offers generous capacity for luggage. Compared to its predecessor, the upgraded Sonata's interior represents a significant improvement, particularly for occupants in the front seats.
The Essence of the Vehicle
2024 Hyundai Sonata N-Line: Turbocharged Excitement on Wheels
In the latest iteration of the Hyundai Sonata N-Line, power and performance take center stage with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine generating a spirited 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, this powerhouse delivers exhilarating acceleration, leaving a grin on the faces of drivers as they effortlessly overtake slower vehicles on the road.
Acceleration tests reveal the Sonata N-Line's impressive speed credentials, clocking in at 5.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and completing the quarter mile in 14.1 seconds at 103.7 mph. Surpassing even its cousin, the Kia K5 GT, the Sonata showcases its agility and performance prowess, making it a joy to drive through city streets and on winding roads alike.
Navigating through twists and turns, the Sonata N-Line demonstrates its handling finesse, effortlessly tackling aggressive corners with poise and control. Equipped with responsive transmission dynamics, it eagerly downshifts and holds gears when needed, especially in Sport mode, enhancing the driving experience.
On less demanding roads, the Sonata maintains its comfort and refinement, offering a smooth ride that keeps vibrations at bay. Whether cruising on the freeway or navigating stop-and-go traffic, the Sonata N-Line proves to be a comfortable and serene companion for daily commutes.
While the Sonata N-Line impresses with its performance, enthusiasts may yearn for a limited-slip differential to better handle high-torque situations and summer tires for enhanced track grip. However, for those seeking a more subdued driving experience, the 2024 Sonata lineup also includes options such as a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine and a hybrid variant. Additionally, while the N-Line is exclusively front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive is available for the non-turbo 2.5-liter engine, catering to a range of preferences and driving conditions.
Exerting Maximum Effort
At a competitive as-tested price of $36,310, the Sonata N-Line delivers an enticing blend of excitement and comfort, catering to a wide spectrum of drivers. Whether tackling exhilarating canyon roads or enduring daily commutes, this model offers accessible thrills without compromising on practicality.
In comparison, the top-tier 2024 Kia K5 GT commands a slightly higher price tag at $37,345. However, enthusiasts may need to exercise patience as they await the arrival of the new 2025 K5 model for the latest advancements from Kia.
Hyundai's commitment to enhancing performance and vehicle dynamics is evident in the Sonata N-Line. Amidst the SUV-dominated automotive landscape, Hyundai's dedication to sedan offerings is refreshing. The 2024 Sonata N-Line stands as a testament to this commitment, providing drivers with a delightful driving experience while prioritizing comfort and convenience.
