The Gender Gap Between Trump and Harris

The gender gap between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris highlights the contrasting ways their policies, leadership styles, and public perceptions resonate with different gender groups. As a former president and a current vice president, their approaches to issues such as gender equality, women’s rights, and social policies have sparked discussions on how gender influences political support and divides in American politics.

Exit polls from the 2024 U.S. presidential election indicate a 10-point gender gap in voting, with Democrat Kamala Harris receiving more female votes, while Republican Donald Trump was favored by a majority of male voters. Trump is projected to be the winner of the election as of late Tuesday night.

A slight majority of white women voted for Trump over Harris, though this was balanced out by a lower number of Hispanic and Black women supporting Trump. As a result, exit polls estimate that only 44% of U.S. women backed the new president. Among Black women, support for Trump was particularly low, with just 7% voting for him, while Hispanic women showed 37% support, a 7-point increase from 2020. Hispanics, comprising 15% of eligible U.S. voters at 36.2 million, are a rapidly growing demographic.

Despite the increasing diversity in the U.S., exit polls revealed lower voter turnout among Black and Hispanic Americans. Edison estimates that 71% of voters were white in 2024, a 4-point increase from 2020, while the share of Black and Hispanic voters decreased by 1-2 points, to 11% and 12%, respectively. White female turnout is projected to have increased, though with fewer votes for Trump, while white male turnout is expected to have slightly decreased.
