Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore embarked on their journey to the International Space Station aboard Boeing’s Starliner on June 5 last year. They made their return to Earth this morning using SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.
Originally planned as an eight-day mission, their stay at the space station extended to nine months. They launched on the Boeing Starliner but had to return on SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft due to unforeseen circumstances.
Before landing in the ocean near Florida’s coast, the space capsule successfully deployed its parachute. The two astronauts traveled back to Earth alongside NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, completing a 17-hour journey.
Upon arrival, a NASA recovery team opened the hatch and assisted the astronauts onto mobility aids.
Sunita Williams was seen cheerfully waving and giving a thumbs-up as she exited the capsule.
The spacecraft executed a deorbit burn at 2:41 a.m., a maneuver that involves firing its engines in the opposite direction of travel to slow down. This was followed by a successful splashdown at 3:27 a.m., 44 minutes later.
At 10:35 a.m. (IST), Crew-9 undocked from the International Space Station, with NASA releasing a video showing the spacecraft detaching from the station. SpaceX, under Elon Musk’s leadership, was responsible for ensuring the Crew-9 team’s safe return to Earth. The mission was launched using the Dragon capsule mounted on the Falcon 9 rocket. Crew-9’s departure made way for Crew-10, which has now replaced them aboard the space station.

Their journey marked the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner capsule. However, when the Starliner experienced propulsion system failures, it was deemed unsafe for a return trip, leading to its uncrewed return in September.
As uncertainties surrounding their return mounted, NASA reassigned them to SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission. To accommodate the stranded astronauts, SpaceX sent a Dragon spacecraft in September with a two-member crew instead of the usual four.
After multiple delays, a Dragon spacecraft carrying a relief team finally arrived at the space station on Sunday.
Returning to Earth after a prolonged stay in space presents a range of health challenges for astronauts, including bone and muscle deterioration, radiation exposure, and vision impairment.
The absence of gravity in space leads to a significant reduction in bone density, often causing irreversible damage. NASA estimates that astronauts can lose approximately one percent of their weight-bearing bone density each month in space if preventive measures are not taken.
Muscles, which are constantly engaged in movement on Earth, weaken significantly in space due to the reduced need for exertion.
Radiation exposure is another major concern for astronauts. Unlike on Earth, where the atmosphere and magnetic field provide natural protection, astronauts are exposed to much higher radiation levels in space, posing potential long-term health risks.
