INDIANOLA, Miss. (WLBT) - A mass shooting early Sunday morning in Indianola has left three people dead and at least 16 injured.

Chief Ron Sampson of the Indianola Police Department reported that the shooting occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday on Church Street. The victims who were killed were Cameron Lee Burts, Marquette Baits of Greenville, and Areon Butler of Indianola, all aged 19.

Chief Sampson informed 3 On Your Side that the injured victims were transported to various hospitals, some as far as Jackson. He mentioned that some of the injured are currently being interviewed for details about the suspects.

When 3 On Your Side visited the crime scene on Monday, they found at least nine bullet casings in a parking lot off Church Street. The area was also littered with leftover crime scene tape and shattered glass. A nearby resident stated that the shooting resulted from an argument that began in a nearby nightclub.

“They were just trying to party and have a good time, and a fight broke out in Club Lit,” said Charles Modley. “After it broke loose, all hell broke loose with it.” Chief Sampson said the investigation is ongoing with the Greenville Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. He also noted that no arrests have been made yet and believes multiple suspects were involved.

3 On Your Side reached out to the mayor’s office for comment but did not receive a response. The city of Indianola has not yet released an official statement regarding the shooting.
